- When is the next model expected? Later in 2025, probably October to December
Mac Pro: what you need to know
Apple last updated the Mac Pro with the M2 Ultra chip at WWDC in June 2023, but the overall design of the desktop tower remains unchanged from 2019.
A new Mac Pro will be released “later in 2025,” according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. Based on this time frame, it seems most likely that Apple will announce the next Mac Pro sometime between October and December of next year.
Gurman said the new Mac Pro will be equipped with an M4 Ultra chip, which should offer significant improvements in CPU performance over the M2 Ultra chip. The Mac Pro would also get hardware-accelerated ray tracing to improve graphics rendering in games, a technology that was introduced with the M3 series of chips. Additionally, the M4 chips are rumored to have a faster and more efficient neural engine for AI tasks. Lastly, Gurman said the next Mac Pro could support up to 512GB of RAM, up from the current limit of 192 GB.
No other major updates or design changes have been rumored for the next Mac Pro yet.
Gurman said Apple has tested an M3 Ultra chip internally, but said he’s “virtually certain that at least some of Apple’s high-end desktops” will skip the M3 series of chips. So the Mac Pro could go from the M2 Ultra to the M4 Ultra.
