A medical student’s lovely dual-screen setup adds an M3 MacBook Pro as a third screen by holding it open on a stand. The three screens form a pleasingly staggered formation, with one vertically on the left, one horizontally in the center, and then the laptop screen.

M3 Pro MacBook Pro setup uses the laptop as a third screen
Redditor and medical student Felluimeinmeer (“Lu”) showed off the lovely setup in a post titled “New setup.” His caption reads: “What’s missing?”
“However, to give you the best advice, we need to know what you’re using it for,” one commenter noted. “Editing, encoding, streaming? It’s helpful to suggest things that fit your needs, like for example, there’s no point in having a webcam if you’re not making a video call, right? Let us know your workflow and we can take it from there!
“It’s just for medical school,” Lu responded. “Having multiple sources open without interruption is the goal of this setup: Safari, Digital Book Word/Notion, and a video. I don’t need a webcam. I only have two meetings in a semester.”
MacBook Pro M3 Pro in Space Black
Lu uses a space black MacBook Pro M3 Pro to control two 27-inch Dell 4K displays, one in portrait orientation (portrait) and the other in landscape orientation (landscape). The MacBook sits open on an Amazon Basics stand. A nice BenQ Screenbar Halo LED monitor light sits on the center screen.
The laptop may look the same as the base MacBook Pro M3, but it features a big step up in the chip department. And by the way, you can’t get the base model in space black. But the biggest difference is in computing power, with the M3 Pro giving you 50% more bandwidth with its higher number of CPU and GPU cores, not to mention more unified memory. And the M3 base only supports one external display.
Check out the basic offer alongside the M3 Pro:
- MacBook Pro M3: 8-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 8GB unified memory, 512GB SSD
- M3 Pro MacBook Pro: 11-core GPU, 14-core GPU, 18GB unified memory, 512GB SSD
Lu rounds out his setup with a full-size Magic Keyboard with a numeric keypad and Touch ID, a Logitech MX Master 3S mouse for Mac, and a pair of KEF LS50 Wireless II speakers.
So what’s missing?
And given the subtitle of your post, did the commenters tell you what’s missing? You can bet they did.
Commenter recommendations for configuring the M3 Pro MacBook Pro:
- “I would recommend the LG DualUp monitor. “It’s great for multitasking as it allows you to keep multiple sources open within your direct line of sight.”
- “KEF stands would be a nice addition.”
- “Get rid of the spotlight.” (Lu’s response: “They are for the health of my eyes, without them at night my eyes are quite tired due to the high contrast between the monitor and the wall.” Separate response to the answer: “So lower the brightness of the monitor? “)
