The app marks the first major, officially sanctioned game emulator for iPhone since Apple started allowing them, with extensive console emulation from the original Nintendo Entertainment System to the Nintendo 64 (and even the Sega Genesis, for when you want to play those ). games that Nintendo doesn’t).
Delta developer Riley Testut told The Verge via email that the app is identical to the version debuting with AltStore PAL.
The application features on-screen buttons that change their design and appearance to adapt to the system you are emulating.
Delta can turn your iPhone into a pseudo-Nintendo DS or GBA.
It’s also compatible with Bluetooth controllers like the Xbox One Series S or PS5 controllers, and the app lets you customize its layout or set up additional buttons for things like quick save states (essentially letting you pause a game whenever you want and load it from that point). ). later) or fast-forward through the old-school game often unskipgamescutscenes or an endless stream of startup logos.
Delta even works with some of Nintendo’s wackier input methods, like the gyroscope in WarioWare: Twisted. or the microphone controls in Nintendo DS games like Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (“OBJECTION!”).
Delta also has other touches, such as automatically grabbing box art from your games and the ability to customize that art using its built-in database or your own custom images, users can import controller skins or create their own. It also supports multiplayer for NES, SNES, and N64 (up to four players), as well as AirPlay streaming.
A small number of other emulators came ahead of Delta, including one called iGBA that ripped directly from Testut’s GBA4iOS code and an NES emulator called Bimmy. However, both were short-lived, as Apple took down iGBA for violations of the App Store‘s spam and copyright rules and the Bimmy developer backed down in light of Nintendo’s recent crackdown on emulators.
In particular, the Testut application is not new. It released version 1.0 of Delta in 2019 along with its original AltStore jailbreak alternative. That means the app has already gone through five years of feature iterations and bug fixes, so it’ll likely be one of the most polished emulation experiences on the iPhone for a while.
