Slow Horses has proven to be one of the most successful shows on Apple TV+, but The streaming service already has its replacement before seasons 4 or 5 are even released.
The British spy thriller television series, directed by Will Smith, is based on the Slough House book series by Mick Herron, with season 1 adapting 2010’s Slow Horses, season 2 following 2013’s Dead Lions and Real Tigers 2016 as inspiration for Season 3. However, Apple TV+ is evidently happy with the show and is expanding its partnership with Herron outside of Slow Horses.
The story of Slow Horses revolves around a section of MI5 called Slough House, which is essentially where the most undesirable agents are sent after proving themselves incompetent at their jobs. As a result, these MI5 rejections are known as “slow horses”.
They perform menial administrative tasks instead of engaging in exciting field work, and their cantankerous boss, Jackson Lamb, played by Gary Oldman, doesn’t make their lives any easier. But the show would be boring if all that happened was administrative work, which is why Slow Horses’ characters often find themselves investigating serious crimes that threaten national security.
Down Cemetery Road will be the perfect replacement for slow horses on Apple TV+

While Slow Horses is on hiatus between seasons 3 and 4, Apple TV+ announced that it is developing a new thriller TV series titled Down Cemetery Road (per Deadline). The upcoming project will be based on Mick Herron’s 2003 novel of the same name, the first book he published. Herron also wrote the Slough House series, which inspired Slow Horses, which means Apple wants to expand his working relationship with the author by producing another show that serves as an adaptation of his first novel. Consequently, Down Cemetery Road could be the perfect replacement for Slow Horses.
Season 4 of Slow Horses will adapt Mick Herron’s 2017 novel Spook Street from the Slough House series, while 2018’s London Rules inspires season 5.
Down Cemetery Road and Slow Horses are not only based on Herron’s books, but they also share a writer: Morwenna Banks. Banks is the head writer and executive producer of the upcoming series, indicating that will contain similar themes and tones as the 2022 spy thriller. Down Cemetery Road stars Emma Thompson and Ruth Wilson as the two main characters (Zoë Boehm and Sarah Tucker, respectively) who join forces to investigate the disappearance of a girl after a house explosion. Of course, the story takes many twists and turns as the duo continues to try to solve the mystery.
Down Cemetery Road proves Apple is doubling down on its success with slow horses
Apple TV+ continues working with Mick Herron
News about the Down Cemetery Road series suggests that Apple is quite pleased with the performance of Slow Horses on its streaming service. Apple executives have faith in Mick Herron’s work and want to expand the universe of the 2022 spy thriller show by adding Down Cemetery Road to the list of future Apple TV+ projects. It’s also clear that Herron likes collaborating with the streaming platform, as the author signed on as an executive producer for Down Cemetery Road.
Down Cemetery Road is described as a “companion piece” to Slow Horses on Apple TV+, so it looks like the two works will connect.
The Slow Horses episodes have received high critical praise. the show has a 97 percent Tomatometer rating and a 94 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. at the time of writing this article. Critics applauded the Apple TV+ series for its fresh take on the spy genre, the cast’s impressive performances, and its ability to improve over time (a near-impossible feat in the world of television). Additionally, Gary Oldman won the Satellite Award for Best Actor in a Drama or Genre Series for his role as Jackson Lamb and received BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations for his work.
Slow Horses’ fourth season is highly anticipated after three successful seasons, but the show still needs to solve one major problem.
Is Down Cemetery Road connected to slow horses?
Mick Herron wrote Cemetery Road 7 years before Slow Horses
Down Cemetery Road is described as a “companion piece” to Slow Horses on Apple TV+, so it looks like the two works will connect. However, Mick Herron published Down Cemetery Road seven years before releasing Slow Horses, so it will be interesting to see how the two shows’ stories overlap (or if there will be crossovers). However, fans have even more content to look forward to while they wait slow horses season 4 (It is expected to debut in late 2024.), and by the time Season 5 arrives, Down Cemetery Road could also be ready to premiere.
A release date for Down Cemetery Road has yet to be announced, but it is entering production.
