When it comes to deciphering clues, Swifties are second only to Sherlock Holmes. Taylor Swift has given her fans a lot to speculate about in the lead-up to the release of her new album, “The Tortured Poets Department.”
Last week, the singer released five Apple Music playlists, each featuring a selection of her past songs, which correspond to the five stages of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance) and may hint at the themes from his next album.
Then, on April 13, Apple Music marked the final countdown to their 11th studio album, set to be released on April 19, with a series of teaser tracks.

Fans quickly discovered that the secret words were hidden in Apple Music’s lyric stores. But the meaning of the words remains a mystery… for now.
Here’s what you should know about Taylor Swift’s Apple Music words and what they could mean.
What are Taylor Swift’s words on Apple Music?
Word No. 1: Hereby
After Apple Music announced the “Word a Day” challenge, fans scanned Swift’s Apple Music playlists. They discovered that the lyrics page for a song, “Glitch,” in the “Denial” playlist featured random capital letters in the middle of the words.
The capital letters, H, E, Y, B, E, and R, spell “ HEREBY ” when deciphered.
Apple Music confirmed that “hereby” was the correct word the next day when republished the word resolved from the official Taylor Nation X fan page.
Word No. 2: Conduct
On the second day of the challenge, it didn’t take long for Swifties to discover some randomly capitalized words in “Peace,” a song on Swift’s Apple Music playlist about the negotiating stage of grief.
The capital letters, once unscrambled, form the word “conduct.”
It is not clear whether Swift means “lead” as a verb, as in directing or carrying out, or as a noun, as in behavior.
Word No. 3: This
The song “Better Than Revenge” had lyrics that spelled “this” in capital letters.
Word No. 4: Publish
This word was found in “Clean”.
Word No. 5: We
This word was found in “We were happy.”
Word No. 6: Mortem
This word was found in “Start Over”
What is the final message of Apple Music?
When decrypted, the message reads: “We hereby perform this autopsy.” What does it mean?! No doubt time will tell.
What do Apple Music tracks mean?
Theories are emerging about what these cryptic clues might indicate. Some fans think that the words “hereby” and “conduct” have echoes of a judicial proceeding or legal document.

The words “hereby” and “conduct” also reminded fans of the handwritten note Swift shared on Instagram when she announced the upcoming release of “The Tortured Poets Department” in February.
That note begins with verses that could be lyrics or verses from a poem: “And so I become evident / my tarnished shield. / My muses, acquired like bruises / My talismans and charms…”
One X fan connected the phrase “present as evidence” to “hereby” and “conduct,” which sound legal.
“Y’all now we have ‘hereby conduct’ in addition to ‘present evidence,'” one fan wrote in X. “I’m starting to think that on this whole album, she’s going to revisit what happened and present it as if she were in court.”
Another fan echoed this theory, wondering if “The whole aesthetic of this album revolves around a courtroom and a trial.”
Other fans thought the words might have something to do with a wedding ceremony since officiants perform weddings and traditional wedding ceremonies sometimes include the phrase, “I hereby pronounce you husband and wife.”
“’hereby’ is formal language suitable for marriage vows or courtrooms,” a person wrote in X. “I’m going to lose my mind. hereby performs WHAT.”

Meanwhile, some fans dove down a Disney rabbit hole and wondered if there might be a subtle connection between the word “hereby” and Disney’s “The Little Mermaid.”
One of the songs on the album is called “But Daddy, I Love Him,” which is almost identical to a line Ariel says to her father in the 1989 Disney film: “Daddy, I love him!”
Later, the contract that Ariel signs with the sea witch Ursula begins with the phrase “I hereby…”
These possible subtle references to “The Little Mermaid” left some wondering if Swift’s album could include the theme of giving away her voice in the name of love, as Ariel does.
