With just a fortnight to go until the release of Taylor Swift’s eleventh album, The Tortured Poets Department, the singer has created five new playlists on Apple Music to correspond with the stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance.
Following the announcement of her white, beige, and black aesthetic album, fans theorized that the album could correspond to the five stages of heartbreak.
“So naturally, she’s created a series of exclusive playlists, choosing songs from her own catalog to fit each stage,” reads an Apple Music press release. Each of the stages includes narration from Swift.
First, there’s Denial: Songs from I Love You, It’s Ruining My Life. Here are some of the songs included:
- “Lavender mist”
- “Snow on the Beach (with more songs from Lana Del Rey)”
- “Sweet Nothing”
- “Failure”
- “Betty”

Swift says, “This is a playlist about getting so caught up in the idea of something that it’s hard to see the warning signs, which can lead to moments of denial and maybe a little self-delusion. Results may vary.”
Next up is the angry You Don’t Get to Tell Me About Sad Songs. Here are some of the tracks:
- “Shitty vigilante”
- “High infidelity”
- “I would have, I could have, I should have”
- “Exile”
- “Illegal Affairs”
Swift says, “All of these songs have one thing in common: I wrote them while feeling angry. Over the years, I’ve learned that anger can manifest itself in many different ways, but the healthiest way it manifests in my life is when I’m able to write a song about it, and often that helps me work through it.”
Third, the negotiation: Can I cry? Songs. Here are some of the songs:
- “The Great War”
- “This is me trying”
- “Peace”
- “The Archer”
- “Cornelia Street”
Swift explains: “This playlist takes you through songs that I wrote when I was in the negotiation stage, moments when you’re trying to make deals with yourself or someone you care about, you’re trying to make things better, often feeling really desperate, because we often have an intuition that tells us things aren’t going to go the way we expect, which makes us more desperate, which makes us negotiate more.”
Fourth, depression: Old Habits Die Screaming Songs. Here are some of the songs:
- “Bigger than the whole sky”
- “Dear reader”
- “Garnet”
- “Champagne problems”
- “You’re losing me”
The Eras Tour star says: “We’re going to explore the feelings of depression that often seep into my songs. In times like these, I’ll write a song because I’m feeling lonely or hopeless. And writing a song seems to be the only way to process that intensity of an emotion. And while these things are very, very hard to get over, I often feel like when I listen to or write songs that deal with this intensity of loss and hopelessness, it’s usually at the phase where I’m close to getting over that feeling.”
And finally, acceptance, which is the title of one of the songs: I Can Do It With a Broken Heart Songs. Here are some of the songs:
- “You’re alone, boy”
- “Midnight Rain”
- “Labyrinth”
- “The 1”
- “August”
Swift says, “Here we finally find acceptance and can begin to move past loss or heartbreak. These songs represent making room for more good things in your life, making that choice because oftentimes when we lose things, we also gain them.”
