If you’ve ever tried the Sony WF-1000XM4 or WF-1000XM5 Wireless Noise Canceling Headphones, you’ll know that they are among the best headphones ever. Amazingly, Sony has managed to pack the best sound quality and ANC technology into these compact little headphones. However, the best comes at a price, and Sony’s flagship headphones are quite expensive: $200 or $300, depending on which model you get. However, whichever Sony headphones you choose, you can be sure that they will blow the AirPods Pro out of the water.
I’ve tried every pair of premium ANC headphones on the market, so I know what I’m talking about. The Airpods Pro are great and I use a pair. But these days I mainly use them for voice calls, Facetime calls, and Zooms, as they switch between my Mac and iPhone seamlessly. When it’s time to listen to music or audiobooks, I choose my Sony WF-1000XM5 headphones. They have better sound quality, much better active noise cancellation, and even better battery life. And right now, they’re on sale for $248 instead of $300. Or, if you want to spend even less, the previous-generation WF-1000XM4 earbuds that still outperform the AirPods Pro are $120 refurbished.
Anyone who knows anything about the headphone market knows that Sony’s wireless noise-canceling headphones are believed to be the best in the business. They combine class-leading active noise cancellation technology with phenomenal sound quality.

Sony outperforms all its rivals, according to many critics and consumers.
This was true with the previous generation WF-1000XM4 in-ear headphones. And it’s also true with the new Sony WF-1000XM5 Wireless Noise Canceling Headphones. This major update features key improvements in all major areas.
Key improvements
The WF-1000XM4 headphones were already impressive. It’s actually hard to believe has somehow managed to improve them. However, the newer Sony WF-1000XM5 model offers better sound quality, better ANC performance, and the same great battery life despite being much smaller and lighter.
Here’s a summary of the key upgrades the Sony WF-1000XM5 headphones offer compared to the XM4 model:
- New smaller and lighter design
- More compact charging case that still offers 24-hour battery life
- Better sound quality with new custom drivers
- Better bass response
- Improved noise cancellation technology and additional microphones
- Bluetooth 5.3 instead of Bluetooth 5.2
- Multipoint connectivity for better switching between devices
Sony WF-1000XM5 deep dive
Compared to the XM4 headphones, Sony’s new WF-1000XM5 features even better noise cancellation technology, as well as improved sound quality and dramatically improved passive isolation. But the biggest improvement is perhaps the design, as the new XM5 headphones are much more compact than the previous WF-1000XM4 model. They also have a more comfortable fit.
On the other hand, some people have complained that the new XM5 ANC headphones sound a little more synthetic than the previous generation model. In my opinion, the Sony WF-1000XM5 has fantastic sound quality. However, I find the bass to be a little fuller on the XM4 headphones, which makes sense since they are much larger.
The only change I don’t really like on the WF-100del is the switch to glossy plastic. I find the matte finish of the XM4 headphones much better, especially in black. Fortunately, my XM5 headphones are silver, so they are less noticeable.
Overall, most people agree that the WF-1000XM5 headphones look, feel, and sound better than the previous model. Still, the XM5 model may be a tough sell when you can get WF-1000XM4 headphones for much less right now. At least the Sony WF-1000XM5 is on sale for $248, which helps make up some of the difference.
If you want to spend as little as possible, you’ll get refurbished XM4 headphones, which start at $120 right now. In any case, rest assured that your new Sony headphones will blow the AirPods Pro out of the water.
