As we get closer to the long-awaited unveiling of the next iPhone, the iPhone 16 series, there have already been numerous leaks, from different displays on some models to a wider implementation of the exceptional tetra prism camera, more efficient OLED displays, and an Improved main camera.
Now, there’s a report of a change that’s a complete surprise: a switch to MagSafe. This could not only mean better appearance, but also a significant increase in performance.
As you may know, Apple brought MagSafe to the iPhone in 2020 alongside the launch of the iPhone 12 series. Wireless charging had arrived on Apple phones three years earlier and was great, but there was the unpleasant possibility that if you didn’t place the phone on the charging pad correctly, you would wake up in the morning and discover that the phone had not arrived. It is not loaded.
A ring of magnets on the back of the iPhone and corresponding magnets on the charger solved this problem perfectly. MagSafe was a huge success, so much so that the magnetic ring is now part of Qi2 chargers, which also work with Android phones.
Now, ShopSystem, a French website, has published images of case manufacturing molds that are supposedly for the iPhone 16 series and showing the cutouts where the MagSafe magnets will be located. They are positioned similarly to the current models, but are noticeably much thinner, although in the family circle more a separate bar, looking as always like a magnifying glass.
What does this mean For Apple iPhone 16?
Well, Apple is constantly looking to improve design elements and has found a way to achieve the same effect with a thinner, more discreet magnet setup.
Your next question will be: what about older iPhones and older MagSafe chargers? Well, it certainly was mine.
They will surely work. Apple will have taken backward compatibility into account: just think about how the Apple Watch can still use straps designed for the first Apple Watch released almost 10 years ago.
I would be flabbergasted if Apple hadn’t taken this fully into account.
At the very least, this change should mean that the design of clear iPhone cases could look a little more subtle, but there may also be a bigger change that goes beyond the way it looks and relates to performance.
A previous claim, picked up by Keynote USA, suggested that Apple had previously tested faster charging, up to 20W via MagSafe, up from the maximum of 15W at the moment. That rumor emerged last year, but it was said to be for the iPhone 16 series.
That would allow for much faster wireless charging and, if the previous report is correct, faster wired charging as well, from the current 29W to 40W.
If this is true, then (as is often the case with Apple) improvements in design and performance will go hand in hand.
May 5 update. How big are your hands? Same size as yesterday, right? Some of the latest leaks about the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro series have revealed that notable size increases could be coming. According to the reliable Sonny Dickson in X A few days ago, it is the iPhone 16 Pro Max that is going to be the one that improves grip, thanks to its largest screen size to date, 6.9 inches, a notable increase compared to the 6.7 inches of the current iPhone 15 Pro Max.
As Tech Radar’s Axel Metz notes, “The larger screen size of both models will reportedly allow for an upgrade to the ultra-wide camera on the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, and an increase in the optical zoom range for the iPhone 16.” ProMax”.
Metz says that “the iPhone 16 Pro Max looks huge.” So should your fingers worry? Well, while your little pinky might have trouble reaching the screen, Apple will have done extensive testing to ensure that most gloves can do it.
The thing is, you usually get a larger screen by using thinner bezels, but the edges of the iPhone’s screen are already very narrow, so there’s limited room for expansion there. We’ll find out more in due time, but I’m pretty sure Apple will have found a way to make this new design work, perhaps by changing the screen ratio to make the new phone taller and slimmer, although the mockups of Dickson appear quite similar in proportions. More like we have it.
