Apple’s iMac Pro has been shrouded in mystery since it was discontinued in 2021. Over the past year, it was back in the news when numerous leakers and analysts claimed that a new one would be arriving soon. But when exactly? That’s far from certain.
Now, however, we may have gotten a little closer to knowing, and that’s not good news if you were expecting an imminent update. That’s because reporter Mark Gurman’s latest Power On newsletter outlined Apple’s plans for 2024, and the iMac Pro is conspicuous by its absence.
In the report, Gurman sets out his expectations for next year for Apple products. We can expect major changes to the AirPods and Apple Watch lineups, with the Vision Pro also hitting stores. Of course, there will be the iPhone 16, while on the Mac front, we can expect “big updates” for the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro.
That’s where it ends. We wouldn’t expect any changes to the 24-inch iMac, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro, as they’ve all been updated in early 2023. That simply leaves the iMac Pro on the list of rumored Apple products, and Gurman doesn’t mention it. absolutely.
Still on the roadmap
This does not mean that Gurman has completely abandoned the idea of an iMac Pro arriving. But it does seem to indicate that, at least, it is not imminent. It could suggest that the device won’t even launch next year.
Gurman previously spoke about the iMac Pro. In fact, in October 2023, he noted that Apple was still working on the device and that it would likely arrive “in late 2024 or 2025.” This is in line with a report from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who previously claimed that the iMac Pro would launch in 2024.
According to Gurman, Apple “postponed” plans for an iMac Pro due to its cost. However, the project was never completely canceled and the company is still working on it, Gurman believes.
That means that if you’re waiting for a larger iMac, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not available. We will simply have to be patient.
Expect a high price
While we don’t know what’s wrong with the iMac Pro, we can hazard a guess at its features based on what Gurman said in the latest Power On newsletter, as well as what’s been revealed in previous leaks.
Since it will be a pro-level device, the iMac Pro will likely be equipped with at least an M3 Pro chip, and we can probably expect an M3 Max option as well. Unlike the M2 generation, where pro devices faced long delays while Apple reportedly worked to prepare its chips, the M3 Pro and M3 Max were released alongside the entry-level M3. That gives me hope that the iMac Pro delay won’t last much longer as the chips are ready to go.
But there are other issues to deal with. The iMac Pro will come with a 32-inch display with mini-LED technology, which would make it the largest iMac ever released. Given the current $4,599 starting price of the Pro Display XDR, which is also 32 inches wide and features mini-LED technology, that alone could send the price out of control, even before you get to the powerful chip inside of the machine.
All of that means the iMac Pro has a lot of hurdles to overcome. He appears to be on his way, despite the absence of him in Gurman’s report. But when it will arrive and how much it will cost is a matter of debate. Don’t be surprised if it’s incredibly expensive.
