Apple Music closed out its list of the 100 greatest albums of all time on Wednesday with the top spot for “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.”
Lauryn Hill’s 1998 solo project beat out Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On,” The Beatles’ “Abbey Road” and Stevie Wonder’s “Songs in the Key of Life,” among others.
Meanwhile, “What’s Going On” is the leading album on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums list, which places Hill’s “Miseducation” at No. 10.
“Unlike other charts, we wanted it to reflect albums that truly had an impact on the music artists make today and for these to be hand-selected by the most passionate people on Earth,” Scott Plagenhoef, global head of music programming for Apple Music, told KeynoteUSA.
Hip-hop was the most represented genre on the list, with 22 albums. Soul and R&B came in second with 19 albums, followed by rock and alternative, tied with 15 albums each. Reggae, country and Latin albums each had one, and Bad Bunny was apparently the only Latino to appear on the list (“Un verano sin ti” at No. 76).

Plagenhoef said collaborators were asked to look back and consider the impact of the albums under consideration.
“I was pleasantly surprised to see that a large number of artists – Sade, Janet Jackson, Björk, A Tribe Called Quest, Steely Dan, Erykah Badu, Portishead and many more – who instinctively feel more relevant today actually, quantitatively, rank higher on this list than expected,” Plagenhoef said.
Here are the top 10 albums on Apple Music’s chart.

What is the Apple Top 100 Albums list?
In a press release, Apple said the list was chosen by a committee that included artists, Apple Music employees and industry experts, and is a “love letter to the records that have shaped the world we live in and listen to.” The California-based company said it did not take streaming statistics into account when compiling the list.
The release of the top 10 was accompanied by a panel discussion between artists Nile Rodgers and Maggie Rogers, Apple Music’s global creative director Zane Lowe, and radio personality Ebro Darden.
During the debate, panelists praised the timeless nature of the flagship album.
“There are a lot of young people and a lot of young artists who listen to (Miseducation) 10 or 15 years after it came out and it’s becoming part of their artistic DNA,” Lowe said.
Chart-based programming will continue for another week on Apple Radio.
