Today, July 15, Apple released the first public beta of iOS 18, intended for anyone who wants to try out iOS 18 before its official release later this year. All you need to do is sign up on Apple’s Beta Software Program website and you’ll be able to download and install the iOS 18 beta wirelessly right now.
You probably know that the iOS 18 beta has been available for developers for over a month now, since June. Not everyone wants to try out the developer beta, because, well, it’s for developers and it’s usually less stable than a public beta. Ultimately, both betas aren’t as stable as the general public version of iOS 18, but that one won’t be available until the fall, and you might not want to wait until then to try out iOS 18.

iOS 18 brings several major new features and revisions to iPhone, including a completely redesigned Photo Album, Satellite Text Messaging, a dedicated Passwords app, better customization for your Home Screen, a revamped Control Center, and support for RCS Messaging.
In June, shortly after WWDC, Apple released the first developer beta of iOS 18. A few weeks later, the second developer beta of iOS 18 was released. And last week, Apple announced the third developer beta of iOS 18. Today’s release is the first public beta of iOS 18, with several more to be released in the coming months.

First, is your iPhone compatible with iOS 18?
Aside from Apple Intelligence, which will be exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max when it launches later this year and next year, iOS 18 works on a wide variety of iPhone models from 2018. Here’s the full list of iPhones that support iOS 18:
The iPhone 16, scheduled to be announced later this year, is expected to run iOS 18 out of the box.
Next, a warning…
A public beta is usually more stable than a developer beta, but it’s still a beta, which means you may have to deal with bugs and other critical issues that could negatively impact your phone. If you have a spare iPhone lying around somewhere, use it to run any iOS 18 beta, whether it’s the developer version or the public version.
However, based on my personal experience, there’s usually no problem with running a public beta on your primary phone. Of course, you might encounter the odd bug here and there — maybe a feature in a third-party app doesn’t work exactly as expected, because it’s obviously not optimized for any iOS beta software yet. Thankfully, it’s never crippling — maybe just a little annoying — but if you don’t mind it, running the iOS 18 public beta on the iPhone you use every day shouldn’t be a huge problem.
Also, before you think about updating to iOS 18, first update to the latest iOS 17 version (currently 17.5.1) and then backup your device. Go to Settings > name > iCloud > iCloud Backup and hit Back Now.
If you don’t have enough cloud storage to back up, use your computer.
