Are you about to jump into the shower and take your AirPods with you? No! We’ll get to the point: AirPods offer varying levels of water resistance, but taking them into the shower is a big no-no. It’s a sure way to ruin even the best AirPods or at the very least void your warranty.
If you need a pair of headphones that you can take to the pool or shower, check out our guide to the best waterproof headphones. These cans and earbuds will work perfectly whether you’re taking a quick shower or diving into the pool. Don’t risk your AirPods for these tasks. They are not made for the job.
However, AirPods do offer some water resistance and we’re here to dig a little deeper into what you need to know about using AirPods in the shower.
Are AirPods waterproof?
If you’re wondering: are Apple AirPods waterproof? Then no. No AirPods are waterproof. Some models offer water resistance and can withstand sweat or rain, but a constant flow of water like the jet of water you’ll experience while showering is a completely different story.
The same goes for submerging yourself in water, so swimming in the pool with AirPods is also a bad decision. As Apple explains, AirPods “are not designed for use in water sports, such as swimming, or for showering.” However, they can withstand a tough, sweaty workout. Just remember to take them off before taking that well-deserved shower. You can catch up on a podcast later.
How waterproof are AirPods?
There are currently four models of AirPods available and only two of them are waterproof. Like many of the best wireless earbuds, that means they’re slightly sweat-resistant and can withstand a storm, but they won’t like you getting anywhere near the shower. The waterproof models are the 3rd generation AirPods and AirPods Pro 2. If you can get your hands on the older AirPods Pro, these are also waterproof.
These three models are IPX4-rated. That means they can withstand omnidirectional splashes, like a little sweat or a little rain. However, they cannot withstand water jets or submersion in water.
Unfortunately, older AirPods and Apple AirPods Max do not have an IP rating. Don’t exercise in any of these and avoid rain.
Can you shower with AirPods?
You really can’t. You may have come across many Reddit posts and users saying that it was safe to do so, and you may get away with it a couple of times, but it’s not recommended. Trying to do so will void your warranty and waste your precious headphones for no good reason.
If you have to (please don’t), at least use a shower cap to cover your ears and your AirPods. Your AirPods are still not guaranteed to be safe as moisture can cause problems, but it’s worth a try. Alternatively, avoid showering your face and head, or simply take a bath.
The best solution? Don’t use your AirPods in the shower. Buy one of the best Bluetooth speakers or one of the best waterproof speakers if you are likely to throw water on it. Many models come with a handle so you can hook it inside the shower if you wish.
What do I do if I get my AirPods wet?
Do not panic. Accidents happen. Even one of the Keynote USA team members accidentally washed his AirPods and they still worked after spending the night in rice, although they ended up sounding different.
If you take a brief shower while using your AirPods or get caught in a terrible storm, you might be fine. Remember those Reddit posts? However, try your best not to be that person. As soon as possible, use a microfiber cloth to thoroughly dry your AirPods before putting them back in their case, and then hope for the best.
