Apple will preview this fall’s iPhone software update, iOS 18, in June. But a new report claims that previews show a big update is coming for one of the most essential apps: Notes.
Notes is, I confess, the app I use all the time, for everything from to-do lists to meeting summaries and everything in between. I love it. According to Apple Insider, the new version will have many more features, including support for audio recording, so you can record, save, and play recordings directly from the Notes app.
This is convenient: you can now share recordings from the Voice Memos app in Notes and play them from there, but doing everything in Notes will be a plus.
It would be even better, by far, if you could also add something that voice memos lack: transcription. This is a feature that Google’s app on Pixel phones, Recorder, does brilliantly and is an essential aid in meetings or briefings for many people with Pixel phones.
Samsung has introduced something similar, transcribing recordings after the event, but Recorder transcribes in real-time.
If the new Notes app could do this, it would be tremendous, offering students, for example, the full text of lectures with audio for those fragments where the transcription was not correct.
The report says there will also be an update to the app’s math capabilities: “The feature is said to take advantage of connectivity with the company’s Calculator app, allowing users to integrate Calculator information within the Notes app.”
This is an obvious advantage for people who work with mathematical formulas (which I don’t), as well as usefully providing the ability to convert units, create graphs, and more.
Adding features to beloved apps is always a balancing act. On the one hand, you don’t want to bulk up something that becomes a jumble of unwanted complications or unintuitive mechanics.
On the other hand, the first time you write a sum on a note and realize you need to get out the calculator to confirm you got it right, you suddenly have a feature to add to your wish list.
