When Launched the iPhone 16 Series?
The iPhone 15 series, launched in September last year, was also rumored to have a buttonless design.
For years, rumors have circulated about Apple’s intentions to get rid of physical buttons on iPhones. Now, a new report suggests that this long-awaited change could finally materialize with the iPhone 16. Instead of the familiar click buttons, the iPhone 16 could feature pressure-sensitive capacitive buttons with haptic feedback.
According to Keynote USA News, Apple has placed an order with Taiwanese supplier Advanced Semiconductor Engineering for these capacitive button components. These components would be combined with Taptic Engines on either side of the iPhone 16, mimicking the feel of physical buttons through pressure sensing and vibration feedback.
This switch to capacitive buttons could lead to a sleeker, more unified design for the iPhone 16. Additionally, it has the potential to improve water and dust resistance by eliminating physical button openings.
Interestingly, rumors of Apple getting rid of physical buttons have been around for a while. The company reportedly considered making the iPhone 15 without physical buttons under the codename “Project Bongo.” However, unresolved technical challenges forced Apple to scrap the plan and return to traditional mechanical buttons, albeit introducing a new “Action Button” on iPhone 15 Pro models.
A recent report claims that production of the capacitive button components for the iPhone 16 will begin in the third quarter of 2024. However, some analysts have expressed doubts. They note that this unusually delayed production schedule could indicate a delay, which could bring capacitive touch buttons to the iPhone 17 in 2025. Apple’s history of adapting product roadmaps, as seen with the redesign of touch buttons last minute of the iPhone 15, supports this speculation.
If Apple moves forward with capacitive buttons, it would represent one of the most significant design changes to the iPhone since the removal of the home button on the iPhone X in 2017. While this change could offer a sleeker design and potential benefits, it could also face resistance from users accustomed to the feel and functionality of physical buttons.
While the possible removal of physical buttons draws attention, the iPhone 16 is also expected to introduce other features. Rumors suggest a new dedicated “Capture Button” for quick access to the camera and the expansion of the “Action Button”, currently exclusive to iPhone 15 Pro models, to all iPhone 16 variants.
With September 2024 marking the iPhone launch window, all eyes are on Apple to see if the iPhone 16 truly embraces a button-less future. Only time will tell if users will have to adapt to a new way of interacting with their iPhones.
