The iPad Air 6 may be launching sooner than you think, and we’ve rounded up all the rumors and news you need to know, including potential price, expected release date, and more.
iPads haven’t gotten much love from Apple lately. There wasn’t a single new iPad launch last year, although that could change in 2024. Several new iPads are reportedly in the works, and at least some of them may be announced very soon.
The iPad Air is likely a candidate for an upgrade. The latest model, the fifth-generation iPad Air, debuted in 2022. Apple may announce not one, but two iPad Air models this year with different screen sizes.
The iPad Air 6 could also need a chipset upgrade. You can also see changes in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technologies. Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming iPad Air 6, including its price, specifications, and expected release date.
iPad Air 6: Rumored release schedule
Apple has yet to confirm a release date for the iPad Air 6, but a launch is expected on May 7 during the company’s Let Loose event. The event will take place at 7 a.m. PT and you can watch it live on YouTube or Apple’s website.
iPad Air 6: expected price
The price of the next iPad Air 6 is still unknown. At least one of the two models is expected to cost the same as the iPad Air 5. For reference, the iPad Air 2022 starts at $599. The rumored large-screen iPad Air may cost a little more.
iPad Air 6: Specs news and rumors
The iPad Air comes in a single 10.9-inch screen size, while the iPad Pro models are offered with either a 10.9-inch or 12.9-inch screen. However, Apple could change this with the upcoming iPad Air 6. According to Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will also introduce a new 12.9-inch iPad Air model this year. This means that the Air can now have the same screen sizes as the iPad Pro line.
Apple is expected to ship the iPad Air 6 with a new chipset. While the existing model has the M1 chip, the iPad Air 6 could feature an M2 chip. There is a solid performance difference between the M1 and M2 chips. The M2 CPU is 18% faster than the M1, the GPU is 35% faster, and the neural engine is 40% faster.
A report from 91Mobiles revealed that the design of Apple’s upcoming 12.9-inch iPad Air model will be slightly different. The overall appearance is very similar to the iPad Air design used for the fourth and fifth generation models, but fifth-generation accommodates a larger screen.
Apple
The most notable change is to the rear camera setup, which now juts out from the back in a longer, pill-shaped design, as opposed to the single, round bump seen on the current iPad Air. On the front, the new iPad Air features a design like the current 12.9-inch iPad Pro, but with thicker edges around the screen.
Apple reserves OLED screens for iPad Pros. However, the rumored 12.9-inch iPad Air may have a mini-LED display like the current 12.9-inch iPad Pro, according to young ross, CEO of researchYoung Rosslay Supply Chain Consultants. Apple is apparently using leftover meals from the iPad Pro on the iPad Air.
The 10.9-inch model is expected to continue using an LCD panel as Apple does not have inventory of 10.9-inch mini -LED panels. In comparison, mini-LED panels are more efficient than LCD ones.
Apple may equip the iPad Airs with the newer Wi-Fi 6 (or even 6E) and Bluetooth 5.3 technology. Mark Gurman revealed in his March 10 newsletter that Apple is also preparing a dedicated or specialized version of iPadOS 17.4 for upcoming iPad models. Gurman did not specify how this version will be different from other iPads.
Should you wait for the iPad Air 6?
There is nothing wrong with waiting for the iPad Air 6, considering that Apple could announce it in May 2024. Furthermore, the iPad is anticipated to be priced similarly to its predecessor. Opting for the newer model means you’ll enjoy software updates for a longer period and access to the latest hardware features.
But if you see a heavily discounted iPad Air 5, it’s worth buying. The current Air model includes decent specs for most users.
