Have you encountered situations where your incoming voice or FaceTime call gets muted after you answer it on your iPhone, especially if you have paired Bluetooth headphones with it? Chances are you are not the only one. This is an audio issue that usually occurs when using headphones connected to the iPhone, but the good news is that there is a simple fix, which we are sharing below.

Examples of silent voice calls on headphones paired with an iPhone
Over the past few months, many people have come to me complaining about the ongoing issues they have with pairing Bluetooth headphones with the iPhone and other Apple devices. However, one of the biggest misunderstandings is related to audio routing on voice and FaceTime calls, as it has nothing to do with whether the headphones or earbuds are paired.
As soon as I bought my first iPhone, my biggest frustration was answering calls while using my Bose QuietComfort 35 II connected to the device, which was not the case with my Google Pixel 5 or Pixel 6 Pro. A classic example: My iPhone was in my backpack and I received a call. My first reaction was to answer the call on the Apple Watch. Instead of sending the audio to the connected headphones, I tended to use the Apple Watch speaker by default.
Another constant habit was using headphones while working on the computer. Since I keep my iPhone on my desk at work, I tended to take the call directly on my phone, which by default sends the audio to the iPhone speaker. The same thing happened every time I had the cell phone in my hand.
What is the reason for a silent voice call on the connected headset?
As you may have noticed, this is not a pairing issue, but rather a system configuration issue. If left in default mode, audio routing on voice calls is set to “auto.” That is, audio will be routed to the device you accept the call on. If it’s on the Apple Watch, audio comes through the Apple Watch; if it’s on the iPhone, it will be routed to the phone’s speaker, and so on.
How to fix silent voice calls on headphones paired with an iPhone?
Now we come to the solution part. If you want the call to always go to your headphones regardless of the device you accept the call on, there is a specific setting for this in the Accessibility options. To do so, follow the path below:
That’s it! All your call audio will now be routed to your headphones by default. If you’re not using headphones, the call will be routed to the device you answer it on.

Another solution to fix silent voice calls: balance the audio volume
If changing the call audio routing settings didn’t fix the quiet voice calls on your headphones, there might be other culprits behind it, such as having unbalanced audio channels. For this, there might be cases where you are only using one side of the headphones with a lower volume. So, you can also check if the volume between the left and right channels is centered, follow the steps below.

This may seem logical enough to some people, but for others it is a source of frustration and discontent, especially with third-party headphones such as Bose, Sony or Sennheiser used in conjunction with the iPhone. Below I share two more tutorials to improve your experience with your Bluetooth headphones:
Have you had issues with silent calls or know someone who has? I hope I’ve helped you better understand how certain system settings can make it easier to use peripherals in conjunction with your iPhone and other Apple devices.
