It’s that time of year when you might want to hold off on buying the current iPhone 16 and instead look at upcoming models, because there are some new additions on the horizon. Rumors suggest the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus could come in seven beautiful colors. Plus, all four are likely to be equipped with on-device AI capabilities.
What to expect from the iPhone 16 series
The upcoming iPhone 16 series will feature at least four variants: iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. All four will be updated to the new iOS 18 version, which is considered the biggest iOS update to date.
1. Colors
The iPhone 16 and Plus are rumored to come in seven colors (the most color options on an iPhone yet), including blue, pink, yellow, green, black, white, and purple. Meanwhile, the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max could get two new colors: space black and pink. Meanwhile, another rumor from a well-known leaker suggests we’ll see a tinted rear glass on the iPhone 16.
2. Bigger screens
The new Pro and Pro Max are rumored to have larger displays compared to the current iPhone 15 Pro series. That said, the Pro could have a 6.27-inch display, while its bigger sibling, the Pro Max, could have a 6.85-inch display, larger than the current 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays.
Meanwhile, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus could retain the same display size as the current standard models. If not, the Plus variant could see a minor change in the display size. There is also talk that the standard iPhone 16 models could support Always On Display.
Additionally, the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max could feature Samsung’s advanced M14 OLED displays. Meanwhile, the iPhone 16 and Plus will have to make do with M12 OLED displays.
3. Action button on all four iPhones

Unlike the iPhone 15 series, all four iPhone 16 models will feature an action button instead of a DND switch. And you can customize it to perform various actions. Speculation suggests it may have something to do with Apple’s generative AI plans (possibly a shortcut to an AI-powered chatbot), but take this with a grain of salt until there’s official confirmation.
4. Capture button is coming soon, but only for Pro models
The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max are rumored to have a capture button below the power button on the right side, like a touch-sensitive button with vibration feedback. You’ll be able to quickly take photos or record videos without opening the Camera app manually. Some rumors also suggest that the capture button could come to all four variants, but that’s unlikely given that Apple kept the action button exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro series.
5. A18 processor
As with any iPhone launch, the new iPhones will receive the latest and most updated processors. So, the iPhone 16 and Plus could feature a 3nm A18 processor under the hood. The bigger siblings, the Pro and Pro Max, could feature a 3nm A18 Pro processor.
Additionally, rumors point to Apple exploring the use of graphene to improve cooling, and iPhone 16 Pro models could have a metal casing around the battery to help with heat. With everything in place, Apple is preparing to sell a huge number of 90 to 100 million units from the iPhone 16.
6. Camera Updates
Apple is rumored to be bringing major changes to the iPhone 16 and Plus, especially in the camera department. The new standard models could have vertically arranged cameras, unlike what we’ve been seeing since the iPhone 13 (placed diagonally).
Rumors suggest that the iPhone 16 Pro models could feature an Ultra Wide lens, which will help capture more light for clearer photos, especially in the dark. Additionally, the Pro models could have a super zoom lens and a better selfie camera. Additionally, all four iPhone 16 models could have reduced lens flare.
7. Wi-Fi 7 support
According to analyst Jeff Pu, upcoming Pro models could be upgraded to Wi-Fi 7. It uses 4K QAM, so it can deliver peak data transfer speeds of over 40Gbps — up to four times faster than Wi-Fi 6E. The setup could use the 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz bands at once.
8. Battery
Rumors suggest that all iPhones except the Plus variant will have larger battery capacities. The iPhone 16 Pro could boast 3,355mAh, a slight increase from the iPhone 15 Pro’s 3,274mAh; the iPhone 16 Pro Max is rumored to house the largest battery yet at 4,676mAh, compared to the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s 4,422mAh.
Meanwhile, the standard iPhone 16 could house a 3,561mAh battery, up from 3,349mAh on the iPhone 15, and the iPhone 16 Plus could house a 4,006mAh battery, up from 4,383mAh on the iPhone 15 Plus.
The iPhone 16 Pro models are also rumored to feature stacked battery technology, meaning we could see higher capacity and longer battery life. With that at the core, the next iPhones could support faster 40W wired charging and 20W MagSafe charging.
9. Apple Intelligence arrives with iOS 18
Apple Intelligence will be the backbone of the upcoming iPhone 16 series running iOS 18. With the latest iOS 18, Siri will feature new capabilities that use advanced language models, with some top-tier AI features possibly exclusive to the iPhone 16 models. Leaks indicate that while many of the new LLM features will be available on all iPhones, on-device AI capabilities may be limited to the iPhone 16.
While iOS 18 is coming to many iPhones, some crucial features (if not most) might be exclusive to the iPhone 16 series. You can check out our detailed post on iOS 18 for more information.
10. Simmer MagSafe Charging Ring
Alleged iPhone 16 molds obtained by French website ShopSystem reportedly suggest that all four iPhone 16 models could feature a slimmer MagSafe charging ring compared to their predecessors. The changes are evident in the images shared by the publication. Additionally, the pill beneath the ring appears to have less rounded ends compared to the one on the iPhone 15.
11. Release schedule
Apple typically holds its annual iPhone launch event during the fall. Traditionally, Apple has released New iPhone models around the second half of September. It is important to note that Apple has not yet officially announced the launch date.
12. Prices
There are no hints or rumors about possible price increases at the moment, so the upcoming models could start at $799 for the standard base variant. That is most likely, though, but Apple could also announce a price increase with an upgraded storage variant for the base model.
