Good morning! This is Sean McNulty (connect with me on LinkedIn here if you like), and here’s the Hollywood + Media news you should know THURSDAY, Keynote USARIL 18, 2024.
Where yes, the day has finally arrived, friends. . . The next earnings season is here! NETFLIX kicks off first quarter festivities after the bell today, and just about 6 weeks after the last season ended. It’s like Christmas in July. Well, April.
Wall Street’s Q1 NETFLIX subscriber addition estimates vary as much as its stance on getting into the sports business 🥁 (I’m here all week), but we’ll see where the numbers show up this afternoon, with my full dive into the numbers for I know I will do it tomorrow, of course.
AND: Here is your Tribeca Festival lineup for June, including a Liza Minelli doctor, a HULU Diane von Furstenberg Doc, and Doc Brat Pack Andrew McCarthy which I want to check.
FURTHER: Sundance at least is opening a bidding process considering a new location once their current deal in Park City ends after the 2026 festival. I hear San Diego can be nice in January. . . #Just say
MILLENNIUM ROYALTY: Ashanti and Nelly announced that they are having a baby. and now they are engaged.
ALSO: More layoffs are coming in the video game business; this time TAKE TWO is cutting 5% of its workforce or about 600 people, saving about $165 million when all is said and done.
YEAH: That TIKTOK US sale thing just went up a notch — House Republicans have attached it to the Ukraine aid bill (don’t you love how that’s perfectly legal and customary in DC?), so the Senate is going to have to deal with this a lot sooner than expected, possibly even next week.
- However to keep in mind – The time frame for BYTEDANCE to sell the US TT business is now approximately one year. from the (potential) date of enactment of the bill, compared to 6 months for the original bill.
- List the lawsuits in 3, 2. . . and yes, this is going to happen for a while.
ECONOMY CHECK: The main problem with the inflation rate remaining higher than we would like here in the first quarter is basically that rental costs are not going down according to Bloomberg.
AH JEEZ: FANS and Nike are having a year: first, the revealing MLB uniforms 👀, and now They already ran out of Caitlin Clark INDIANA FEVER t-shirts . . . what are they now in pending order until August. 🤦♂️ The season starts on May 14.
#FUNFACT: The 3 best music streaming services, SPOTIFY, Keynote USAPLE, and YOUTUBE, now represent around 40% of annual revenues on both UNIVERSAL MUSIC (label #1) and WARNER MUSIC (#3).
#SADFDATA: 23 & ME has gone from a valuation of $6 billion to $200 million — Anne Wojcicki now is looking to take it private, as revenue pivots toward things like subscriptions that haven’t panned out. Don’t worry, I’m sure the future of your DNA data (and your family secrets) is fine.
SO: The NHL and the NBA Both set records for total attendance at regular season games this year:
UNI/BLUM Abigail is tracking around $12+ million, which is roughly where Night Swim opened in early January ($11.8 million). So how do you feel about a murderous vampire preteen? (Though note that this one doesn’t have a TikTok dance.)
FINAL VOTE: Okay, yeah, to no one’s surprise: The Donut is beating everyone in The Webbys (Note: the site has nothing to do with real donuts 😏).
But since voting ends today, if you click here to vote for The Anklet, bring . . . Well, I’m not going to call it a smile on Richard’s face, but you can see it in his eyes.
