As Dark Matter completes its first season on Apple TV+, the question of whether a potential season 2 will be released looms over the mind-blowing sci-fi epic.
Directed by Obi-Wan Kenobi star Joel Edgerton, Dark Matter brings to life the 2016 novel of the same name by Blake Crouch (who also serves as showrunner on the series).
The series sees an American physicist accidentally transported to an alternate universe as he struggles to return to his family and the life he left behind.

What are the chances of Dark Matter season 2 happening?
A second season of Dark Matter on Apple TV+ has not been announced, but fans are eager to see it. Season 1 of the hit sci-fi series will end on June 26.
The first season was based on Blake Crouch’s 2016 novel of the same name, and since it was a standalone story when it was written, any follow-up would have to be an original story rather than an adaptation.
Another of Crouch’s novels, Wayward Pines, was similarly adapted for television in 2015. It was also a one-book effort by the author but was extended to television, with season 2 telling a new story beyond the book.
Wayward Pines Season 2 was considered a significant downgrade from Season 1, which was much worse received.
So if Dark Matter were to continue with a second season, there’s a risk that it won’t receive the stellar critical reception that season 1 did.
However, one wild card that Dark Matter has that Wayward Pines didn’t is Blake Crouch himself. Crouch (who wrote the novels Dark Matter and Wayward Pines) was the showrunner of the Apple TV+ series.
If season 2 had an original story, it would already have a more stable foundation, since it has the man behind the story on which the series is based at the helm.
What could happen in Dark Matter season 2?
There hasn’t been a second Dark Matter novel, so a possible season 2 is infinite and as indeterminate as the vast expanse of the multiverse itself.
The book on which the show is based sets up some interesting narrative threads to draw on with its ending, should a second batch of episodes be greenlit.
At the end of Blake Crouch’s novel, Joel Edgerton’s Jason takes his family to another universe, seemingly safe from the alternate version of the physicist who threatened them during Season 1.
If season 2 were announced, it could follow the family as they adjust to life in this new universe and the consequences of existing in an alternate reality from which they are not originally from.
Things in the book seem fine when the story ends, but are there any ramifications for this multiversal move for Jason and his family?
Crouch surely had an idea of where the reality-bending story could go after the end of the Dark Matter novel, and season 2 could be the perfect place to explore that.
