“Argylle,” Apple’s theatrical detective film, catapulted Apple TV+ to the top spot in movie streaming last week with its debut on the service. Two streaming television series from the service also reached the top 10 of the lists.
“Argylle,” starring Henry Cavill, Dua Lipa, and Samuel L. Jackson, among others, originally premiered in theaters in February. The limited run was intended to qualify for possible award nominations and did not attract a large movie audience.
According to Reelgood’s rankings, “Argylle” has surpassed Max’s “The Zone of Interest,” Hulu’s “Poor Things” and Peacock’s “Oppenheimer” during the week of April 11. The action-comedy-romance film debuted on Apple TV+ on April 12.
“Argylle” centers on Elly Conway (played by Bryce Dallas Howard), a reclusive, cat-loving author of a series of best-selling spy novels about glamorous secret agent Argylle (Henry Cavill).
She discovers that her stories eerily mirror the actions of a real spy organization, and must team up with real-life cat-hating spy Aidan (Sam Rockwell) to prevent a global crisis. Alfie the cat is also involved in the misadventures.
Reelgood, which also ranks streaming TV shows, noted that Apple TV+’s “Sugar” ranked fourth among the most popular series. The show stars Colin Farrell as Detective John Sugar, who finds intrigue while searching for the beloved missing granddaughter of a legendary Hollywood producer.
Prime Video’s “Fallout” took the No. 1 spot on the charts, followed by Netflix’s “Ripley” and Hulu’s “Shogun.”
Michael Douglas’ Apple TV+ series “Franklin” also made the top 10, coming in at number seven. In it, Douglas plays American icon Benjamin Franklin as he helps save the American Revolution by forging an alliance with France and then negotiating the peace treaty with England.
Just ahead of “Franklin” on the TV streaming charts are Paramount and Showtime co-production “A Gentleman in Moscow” and Netflix’s “3 Body Problem.”
