The design of the Apple iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro should already be finalized, and Apple will soon move from engineering verification to the trial production stage.
This explains the first dummy units leaking from case makers left and right as they need to estimate the exact design and dimensions before the iPhone 16 hits shelves.
One such fictional set of the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max has already appeared on tape, reflecting two major rumors of design changes.
First, that the iPhone 16 will indeed have a vertical camera and, second, that it would indeed have a new capture button on the side.
The other big new design rumor, that the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max will have larger screens, could actually be confirmed by the leaked models, as there is no reference in the image to compare.
Today, however, a new set of mock cases for the iPhone 16 and iPhone Pro Max have been leaked. sonny dicksonand show a novel distribution of the box cutouts.
iPhone 16 series case cutout hints at capacitive capture button
While the vertical cutout for the New iPhone 16’s camera lens layout is to be expected, the cutout for the new camera capture key indicates something else.
Instead of being covered by the case, as it would have been if you could press it to feel a click, the new button on the iPhone 16 is an open book waiting to be touched with a finger to execute a command.
Apple has reportedly been experimenting with capacitive power and volume buttons for a completely buttonless iPhone for a while now, but apparently scrapped the project as too risky and difficult to pull off.
Instead, it decided to apply the lessons learned to a new capacitive key with forced touch sensitivity located below the power button. It is rumored that it will be called the capture button, indicating that it will have something to do with the camera controls.
As for why Apple would make the capacitive key pressure-sensitive as well, that’s anyone’s guess at this point.
However, it’s rumored that it may have something to do with the image and video capture modes, or the zoom controls, as both the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max are now expected to have Apple’s Tetraprism camera.
