Apple‘s Vision Pro debuted just two months ago, drawing crowds of people to sign up for demos and selling out almost immediately. Since then, interest in Apple’s first mixed reality headset has plummeted and sales are stalling at some retail stores, Bloomberg reports Monday. So what happened to Apple’s latest hardware device?
Some Apple stores reportedly only sell a handful of Vision Pros in an entire week, according to Bloomberg. The hype around the Apple Vision Pro has dropped dramatically since the headphones sold 180,000 units during the January pre-order weekend.
Demand for demonstrations of the technology has also reportedly been “very low” since the product’s launch. Worse yet, many people who book appointments to be evaluated by Vision Pros simply no longer show up.
Not long ago, enthusiastic Apple fans lined up around the corner of Apple stores in New York City to demonstrate the company’s first spatial computing headset. But consumers may have already moved on. Despite dismal sales, the iPhone maker has not stopped promoting the Vision Pro; Apple features the headphones on the Apple.com home page.
Current Vision Pro owners may be letting their headphones collect dust on the shelf. An initial wave of Vision Pro returns may have been overstated, evidenced by lengthy social media posts from tech influencers, but Apple appears to have bigger concerns on its hands. People don’t use their Vision Pros as much as their other Apple products.
Many customers on the VisionPro subreddit complain that the headphones are not practical in everyday life. The forums are full of people saying they rarely use headphones in public. Other common complaints are that the Vision Pro hurts to use, it’s difficult to find apps in the Vision Pro’s App Store, and that the technology is simply isolating.
It was widely expected that enthusiasm for the Apple Vision Pro would wane and the headphones would become a niche product for several years until Apple made a cheaper version.
Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and many others already expected it. Now, these predictions have come true and Vision Pro has all but disappeared from the public conversation.
To be fair, Apple is working to fix some of these issues.
The company introduced space characters a few weeks ago, to give you some friendly companions in the Vision Pro universe; However, the early space characters were a bit creepy. In terms of comfort, Apple sells a Dual Loop Band headphone strap that applies less pressure to your face. That said, it lacks Apple’s usual elegance.
Netflix was one of many popular iPhone apps, along with Spotify and YouTube, that notably stopped creating a Vision Pro app in January. At the time, Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters said his company would “wait and see” whether anyone uses the app. headphones before investing in a new spatial computing application.
A few months later, it looks like Netflix and these other apps aren’t missing out by not having a Vision Pro app. On the other hand, the lack of popular apps on the Vision Pro may have contributed to its initial sharp decline.
