Following the launch of WWDC and AWE 2024 this week, reports have emerged showing that both Apple and Meta may be taking critical steps and restructuring methods to reach the top of the XR mountain.
Additionally, as 2024 progresses, more major technology vendors are entering the device market. While it seems like the space is being conquered by leading companies (like Meta, Apple, HTC VIVE, Lenovo, Varjo, and many others), this perception may quickly change heading into the new year.
Apple and Meta are aware of this period of change. This week, they showed that both companies had revealed notable modifications to their headphone distribution operations to reflect modern market changes.
Meta Restructures Axes Reality Labs and Staff
This week, Andrew “Boz” Bosworth, CTO of Meta announced that Meta has revamped its Reality Labs division and is laying off staff to streamline its hardware ambitions.
The CTO revealed that the division plans to undergo its most significant restructuring since Reality Labs’ inception in 2020. Going forward, the immersive solutions division will be divided into two main operating groups.
One of the groups includes a Metaverse organization that plans to relaunch the tech promise by leveraging hardware like the Quest line of headsets.
The other group is the upcoming Wearable division. In this division, Reality Labs will focus on expanding and refining its broader hardware portfolio, including its Meta smart glasses product, created together with Ray-Ban.
Although the restructuring appears to be a positive step for Meta, which is constantly moving forward with new XR solutions, the company is facing layoffs. Meta does not confirm the number; However, layoffs are not out of place and the company lays off staff every year.
However, the news comes after Meta’s LG partnership came to a halt. In the coming months leading up to Connect 2024, the series of international decisions and restrictions can be unified to translate a clear vision for the future of the company.
The next Apple Vision Pro model is delayed
News of Meta’s shakeup comes as Apple also faces rumors of delays to its upcoming Vision Pro product.
According to the suppliers of its Vision Pro components, Apple informs them that the firm plans to suspend production of the next Vision Pro model.
Apple initially planned to introduce a cheaper version of the Vision Pro with fewer features. However, according to recent news, Apple is putting the brakes on its plans.
Despite the delays, it appears that Apple plans to introduce the Vsion Pro lite in late 2025. The news follows WWDC when Apple unveiled new enterprise and regionally available KeynoteUSAIs. In the future, a more flexible entry-level spatial computing device is likely to debut to increase the user base after the device’s debut years.
