Apple TV+ announced on April 18 that “Sunny,” its new 10-episode mystery thriller/comedy starring Rashida Jones (“On the Rocks,” “The Other Black Girl,” “Quincy”), will premiere nationwide. worldwide with the first two episodes on July 10, followed by new episodes every Wednesday until September 4.
Jones plays Suzie, an American woman living in Kyoto, Japan, whose life is turned upside down when her husband and son disappear in a mysterious plane crash.
As “comfort” she has given Sunny one of a new class of domestic robots manufactured by her husband’s electronics company. Although Suzie initially resents Sunny’s attempts to fill the void in her life, they slowly develop an unexpected friendship. Together they discover the dark truth of what happened to their family.
Created by Katie Robbins (“The Affair,” “The Last Tycoon”), who also serves as showrunner and executive producer and director Lucy Tcherniak (“Station Eleven,” “The End of the F***ing World”), “Sunny” also stars Hidetoshi Nishijima, Joanna Sotomura, Judy Ongg, and Jun Kunimura, among others.
“Sunny” marks the second collaboration for Apple, A24 and Jones following the world premiere of Sofia Coppola, ‘s On the Rocks. Jones also recently starred in the Apple series “Silo,” based on the New York Times best-selling trilogy of dystopian novels by Hugh Howey.
