There have been a lot of rumors about the next-generation Apple homepod. While some expected an iPad-style smart display, we’ve also heard rumors about a HomePod speaker with a smaller LCD screen built in. And the latest leak could give us an idea of what that device could look like.
The image comes from Kosutami, a leak that already showed a series of alleged HomePod components and discarded Apple prototypes. In it we see a round piece of glass in the shape of a porthole, suggesting that this new touch screen could replace the current touch panel on the top of the speaker.

Presumably, this display would be quite simple compared to your average smart display. I bet Apple would add something more like an iPod screen, with basic information about what you’re listening to along with media and volume controls. I assume there would also be touch controls and a main menu with the option to switch between different streaming apps and other features like AirPlay.
It gives you the option to control the speaker and what comes out of it, without necessarily having to use an iPhone, iPad, or Siri to get things done.
Of course, this may be just one of many HomePod products that Apple could be working on right now. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported on a HomePod with an “iPad-like display,” while code in the tvOS beta suggested a 7-inch Apple smart display could be on the way.
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also reported on such a device, while Gurman also noted that Apple has explored the possibility of a HomePod display connected to a robotic arm. Which would be quite strange to have at home, as unlikely as it may seem.
However, it is unclear when such a device will be announced. There’s a chance we’ll hear something at WWDC 2024 in June, but since it’s usually a software-focused event, there’s no guarantee. So we’ll have to wait and see how things develop.
