Laura Richardson regretted the crisis in Venezuela
The general Laura Richardsonhead of the United States Southern Command, emphasized concerns about democratic stability in Venezuela, with a strong accusation against the Chavista regime of Nicolás Maduro after the presidential elections of July 28.
“Democracy and its fundamental values remain under attack globally, and we need look no further than Venezuela, where Nicolás Maduro continues to undermine the democratic will of the Venezuelan people.”Richardson said Wednesday during the South American Defense Conference in Chile. “Democracies work over time to offer themselves to their people,” he added.
He also lamented how the Venezuelan crisis has generated a mass migration of millions of people, which has affected multiple countries in Central and South America.
Richardson argues that the conflict in Venezuela must find a democratic and not a military solution after the recent elections. In an interview with EFE on August 6, he explained the Importance of transparency in the publication of election results to reflect the popular will.
The general in charge of the Southern Command since 2021 oversees contingency plans and security cooperation operations for 31 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. She warned that the increase in violence and instability in Venezuela produced a growing humanitarian crisis in the region and considered that most migrants would prefer to remain in their country if adequate conditions existed, advocating strategies that guarantee stability.

The United States, Argentina, Costa Rica, Chile, Ecuador, Guatemala, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, the Dominican Republic and Uruguay last week rejected the decision of the Venezuelan justice system to validate the electoral victory of Nicolás Maduro and reiterated, in a joint statement, that “Only an impartial and independent audit of the votes, which evaluates all the minutes, will guarantee respect for the sovereign will of the people and democracy in Venezuela.”
“We categorically reject the announcement by the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) of Venezuela, which indicated that it had concluded an alleged verification of the results of the electoral process of July 28, issued by the National Electoral Council (CNE), and which seeks to validate the unsupported results issued by the electoral body,” the eleven countries stated.
The US State Department, meanwhile, said that “now is the time” to that the parties “begin discussions on a respectful and peaceful transition” in Venezuela. “Continued attempts to fraudulently claim victory for Maduro will only exacerbate the current crisis,” it added in a separate statement.
On Thursday, August 22, the Supreme Court upheld Maduro’s reelection, calling the decision “forceful” amid allegations of electoral fraud and “judicialization” by the Venezuelan opposition.
Maduro asked the Supreme Court to “certify” the results of the July 28 elections, in which the CNE declared him the winner with 52% of the votes. The Venezuelan opposition claims to have won the elections and accuses both the TSJ and the CNE of serving Chavismo.
