The plenary session of the Provincial Council of Huesca has given the go-ahead, in an extraordinary and urgent session, to the project for the execution of the renovation works of the western wing of the building former Provincial Children’s Residence to facilitate the location of the study of the Full degree in Medicine from 2026.
The budget for the work has increased by 6.7 to 8.4 million euros due to a series of improvements introduced due to technical needs as well as the general rise in prices, which has required the consideration of the project in the plenary session of the DPH.
New ones are also required improvements in energy efficiency and the University of Zaragoza has also established a series of needs regarding facilities, surfaces and infrastructures which have raised the cost.
The rehabilitation will be financed with three million euros of European funds from the Plan to Promote the Rehabilitation of Buildings (PIREP)which will be completed by the DPH and the Government of Aragon to reach the 8,432,760.59 euros required for the execution of the construction project approved this Tuesday.
The exterior of the building will maintain its current appearance. after the works, since it is a protected historic buildingbut this will not be the case inside, where the latest teaching technology will be implemented to provide the campus with a modern faculty.
The development of the studies will be very practical and, to this end, the building will have rooms that simulate different spaces that can be found in a hospital.
The building consists of three floors: On level zero, in addition to the cafeteria, there will be a laboratory, a simulation centre equipped with chambers for carrying out practices with changing rooms, a warehouse and an archive, while on level 1 there will be another simulation centre equipped, in this case, with three rooms, six spaces and a debriefing (conversation learning room), four theoretical classrooms, two group work rooms and a microscopy room.
Level 2 will include five more theoretical classrooms, four seminar rooms and a computer room, and finally, Level 3 will consist of twelve offices for teachers, five tutoring rooms, two meeting rooms and spaces for administration and management.
According to the president of the Alto Aragon institution, Isaac Claver, The passage of the project through the plenary session with its new budget represents “a new and important step in what will be the achievement of a strategic project of vital importance for the Huesca campus” and for the entire province.”
“In this way,” he continued, “we are responding to a historic demand, generating new opportunities for our youth and, at the same time, training new doctors, which we need so much in rural areas.”
