No, the mega-rich political consultants running the Harris-Walz operation aren’t playing a brilliant game of 3-D chess. Of course, David Plouffe & Company and all their big donors would prefer she go on television and answer questions. After all, Barack Obama used to do that all the time. They’d like to see her with Jimmy Fallon, Bill Maher and on “The View,” and all those kinds of shows. They’d also like to see her on “Meet the Press,” “Face the Nation” and even “KeynoteUSA Sunday.”
No Democrat likes to see Trump and Vance having so much free time on TV, while Harris and Walz are on the sidelines or (supposedly) hiding away doing endless debate preparations.
But they keep it off the air anyway, not because they think it’s a mistake to do interviews., But they do so because they think it would be a mistake for her to give interviews. And they have similar concerns about Walz. In other words, they are not avoiding the press because they like avoiding it. They are doing so because their candidates are so bad that they have no better options.
37 DAYS: VP HARRIS REFUSES TO REVEAL POLITICAL POSITIONS, GIVE PRESS CONFERENCES OR INTERVIEWS
It seems clear that Harris’s people have analyzed the polls, the candidates, and the issues, and have come to the following conclusions:
1. It is impossible to defend Biden and Harris’ record
In fact, the situation is so bad that Harris must somehow pretend that she had nothing to do with Biden and that her campaign is based on a platform of change. Normally, of course, campaign advisers like to work for the president in power, but in this case, Biden’s record is so bad that they are willing to forgo the benefits of being president.
2. Harris cannot be trusted to give interviews, even to friendly journalists.
Her advisers have seen the same videos we’ve all seen – they know how inept and clumsy she is. Plus, they’ve talked to her and asked her practice questions, so they have even more information about how badly she would behave on television. So they’ve decided their best move is to keep her out of the loop.
With Trump and Vance flooding the media with interviews and public appearances, while Harris and Walz remain on the defensive, that could start to really hurt Democrats.

3. Walz is no better than Harris
Of course, the campaign would like to be able to use the vice president as a surrogate, but because of anti-Semitism in the Democratic Party, they couldn’t choose Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and had to go with Walz. Walz is a deeply flawed candidate: he lied about his military service, has a long relationship with communist China, and has a long history of far-left government in Minnesota.
If he goes on TV, he’ll be asked about all of those things, even if he’s on a friendly network. So, once again, the campaign has decided that it’s best for Walz to say nothing. That’s why he’s on the sidelines, too.

That’s why they are where they are, not because they don’t like the press (they love it), but because they have two terrible candidates. Their hope now is that Harris can take the lead and stay there for ten more weeks without having to answer any questions.
It’s a risky bet, since the polls are so close. With Trump and Vance flooding the media with interviews and public appearances, while Harris and Walz remain on the defensive, that could start to seriously hurt Democrats. Undecided voters in places like Wisconsin and Michigan want their questions answered; they don’t like being ignored, and they’ll be more nervous if they think Harris is trying to avoid talking about the issues.

Resist the Harris propaganda. This isn’t 3D chess, it’s a campaign trying to win by any means necessary. As shrewd (and sleazy) as some of the advisers are, they can’t make Kamala’s connection to Harris and Biden’s disastrous record go away via a “meme” or a “vibe.” Her inability to make even a cursory effort to defend it says a lot about her as a candidate and as a person.
If Trump and Vance continue to talk, answer questions and press Harris and Walz on the issues, the pressure on Harris and Walz to say something will be enormous.
