Liga de Quito was surprised at home and fell to Lanús of Argentina by 1-2 in the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana round of 16, at the Rodrigo Paz Delgado stadium.
The Albos had a frenetic start to the match, and in the first quarter of an hour they had several chances to score, until they managed to do so through forward Alex Arce.

At 14 minutes, the Paraguayan striker received a cross from the left flank by defender Leonel Quiñónez. The Paraguayan, unmarked, headed the ball from the edge of the six-yard box to score the first goal of the match.

However, the locals began to lose their identity in the game and stopped attacking, giving control of the ball to Granate, who began to be more offensive, in search of the tie.
The equaliser came 10 minutes later. From a set piece, Brian Luciatti pivoted the ball so that Nery Domínguez could volley a cross into the area that Gonzalo Pérez took advantage of, beating Gonzalo Valle, to equalise.
Liga, despite being at home, was unable to continue making progress and it was the Argentines who continued to be the protagonists of the most dangerous actions in the first half.
At the end of the first half, Granate would take the lead. Marcelino Moreno, in the first minute of added time, received the ball on the right flank and with a subtle shot from the inside edge sealed the result and the Albiceleste victory.
In the second half, the situation did not change much. The university team needed to score, but the goal eluded them. They also showed themselves to be quite erratic in their passes and playing long balls, trying to get past their rivals’ defensive lines, without success.
Lanús, for its part, was strong in the lower part of its team and had several actions to extend the lead and almost secure qualification. However, the figure of Valle prevented a more comfortable defeat for the Quito team.
The return match will be played in seven days. The match will take place at the Ciudad de Lanús stadium next Wednesday, August 21, starting at 19:30. The Argentines only need a draw to advance to the next round. (D)
