- The agreement is aimed at undergraduate students from eight health-related courses, so that their teaching can be carried out in real, productive conditions and as a process of interaction between teachers, students and society.
The San Borja Arriarán Clinical Hospital (HCSBA) and the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Chile renewed their undergraduate teaching assistance agreement, with which both institutions commit to continue their strategic alliance, through community health care and the training of undergraduate students.
The purpose of the agreement is to provide training to students in the fields of Nursing, Speech Therapy, Kinesiology, Medicine, Nutrition and Dietetics, Obstetrics, Occupational Therapy and Medical Technology in real, productive conditions and as a process of interaction between teachers, students and society in the facilities of our institution.
“One of the first lessons I learned when I arrived at HCSBA 12 years ago is that it was not possible to conceive the history, development and evolution of the hospital without the strategic alliance that has been formed throughout history with the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Chile. During that time, it has allowed us to train doctors and specialists not only to serve our hospital, but for the entire country,” said the director of HCSBA, Jorge Wilhelm.
Historically, both institutions have been linked by ties of cooperation and integration, which date back to the 19th century. Since its inception in 1842, the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Chile has been linked to the San Francisco de Borja Hospital in the training of its students and in the development of the first health specialties in the country. This link was also established with the Manuel Arriarán Children’s Hospital at the beginning of the 20th century, advancing in the professionalization of pediatric specialties. It should be noted that the HCSBA was born from the merger of both healthcare establishments.
The Faculty of Medicine has clinical departments embedded in public hospitals. In the case of the HCSBA, there is the Central Surgery, Central Internal Medicine, Central Obstetrics and Gynecology, Central Pediatric Surgery and Pediatrics. There are also the units (corresponding to the single departments) of Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology, Anesthesiology, Pathological Anatomy, Urology and Traumatology.
“This agreement is an alliance between two institutions that are an essential and foundational part of our nation. It is the union of the first women’s hospital in Chile (San Francisco de Borja Hospital), which later operated with the Manuel Arriarán Children’s Hospital, and the first university in the republic,” said Dr. Fernando Munizaga, director of the Centro Campus of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Chile.
For his part, the dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Miguel O’Ryan, mentioned that “we have to congratulate ourselves, because here we are creating new history. Two relevant institutions for the republic that link their hands and their communities to advance better health for our country. Congratulations, thank you very much for allowing us this opportunity and thank you very much for making it possible.”
The agreement with the Faculty of Medicine has been in place since 2009. With this renewal, it will remain in effect until December 2033, which may be extended or expanded by mutual agreement between the parties.
Farewell to Dr. Munizaga
The event also included a farewell ceremony for Dr. Fernando Munizaga, who will cease to be director of the Central Campus of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Chile this year, after accepting a retirement incentive.
“We wanted to take this opportunity to acknowledge someone who has made it possible for this (relationship between institutions) to be so fluid and to occur in a more harmonious way. Dr. Fernando Munizaga accepted the retirement incentive and, therefore, will no longer be an official university official. This was the occasion to recognize a man who has stood out for his commitment, chivalry, kindness and for always being the one who can unite differences, be present at all times and be an exceptional director of the agreement,” said Dr. Andrea Mena, clinical director of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Chile.
Dr. Munizaga is an endocrinologist who joined our hospital in 1984. Since 2007 he has served as director of the Centro Campus of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Chile, where he has always been recognized for his good treatment and technical and teaching skills.
