Tarantino believes that actors have 10% responsibility when handling weapons on set (REUTERS/REUTERS)
Although the American justice system dismissed the lawsuit against Alec Baldwin for the death of the director of photography Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rustthe filmmaker Quentin Tarantino believes that the actor did have a degree of responsibility in the tragedy that occurred in October 2021.
Baldwin was reportedly maneuvering a pistol while filming a scene in the Western. It was a shot in which he had to aim at the camera. The object — which Baldwin claimed was accidentally fired — was loaded with live ammunition, injuring director Joel Souza and killing Hutchins.
During his participation in the podcast hosted by Bill Maherthe director of Violent Times was consulted on this case. Given his extensive experience in action films where firearms are used as props, Tarantino considered that actors are not exempt from responsibility when using these items.

“In that situation, and I think I’m being fair, the gunsmith (the person who takes care of the guns and the bullets) is 90% responsible for everything that has to do with that weapon,…. but the actor is also 10% responsible“, accurate.
“It’s a gun! You’re someone else who has responsibility, to a certain extent,” he added, in contrast to Maher, who considered that it was “not fair” that Baldwin was tried for involuntary manslaughter.
To support his opinion, Tarantino explained that gunsmiths must always show actors the weapons they are going to work with.If there are steps that need to be followed, you follow them.“It’s done with a lot of responsibility, and you know it’s fucking real,” Variety quoted from the aforementioned podcast.
“That’s how the actor handles it. They show you that the barrel is clean. And then they tell you something like ‘here are our blanks’ and ‘here is the gun’… and it’s ready for two or three (shots). And if an actor knows that he has three rounds in his gun, and I’m going to do a scene… and he knows that he has three hot rounds… if one of the rounds doesn’t go off… then he has to call for the scene to be cut,” he said.

In the case of the film Rustthe court found Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the team’s armorer, guilty of involuntary manslaughter and she was sentenced to 18 months in prison in March 2024.
“When I took over Rust“I was young and naive, but I took my job as seriously as I knew how. Despite not having the proper time, resources and staff, when things got tough, I did everything I could to handle them,” Gutierrez Reed said in a statement prior to the jury’s verdict.
Also, the first assistant director, Dave Hallssigned a plea agreement to a lesser charge of negligent use of a deadly weapon.

On the other hand, Alec Baldwin faced charges of involuntary manslaughter, but the case was dismissed on July 12 after a judge ruled that authorities had concealed evidence.
Throughout the process, the actor insisted that he was innocent of any wrongdoing. In a 2021 interview with George Stephanopoulosassured that “I hadn’t pulled the trigger”.
“I didn’t pull the trigger. I would never point a gun at someone and shoot them. Never,” he reiterated. “I have no idea (how a bullet entered). Someone put a real bullet in a gun. A bullet that wasn’t even supposed to be on the property.”.
