The famous vallenato singer Nelson Velásquez will have to silence his voice, at least in everything that has to do with the music he performed before launching himself as a soloist, when he was the voice of the group Los Inquietos del Vallenato. The decision was made in a very unknown setting for the artist and is Justice not only forced him to stop singing the songs, but what was more serious was that he was sentenced to four years in prison..
“A criminal judge in Medellín (Antioquia) sentenced vallenato singer Nelson Aníbal Velásquez Díaz to four years in prison for the crime of violating the property rights of authors and related rights,” the Prosecutor’s Office reported.
The lawsuit, which lasted more than a decade in the courts, arose when Velásquez had already left the group Los Inquietos del Vallenato and was advancing in his successful career as a soloist. The artist took up some of the songs he performed in the band without any type of authorization or payment of royalties; he simply decided to sing the hits of his past, but without respecting the copyright.
For this reason, Jair López, legal representative of Los Inquietos, filed a lawsuit for infringement of property rights and the court ruled in his favor.
The Prosecutor’s Office warns that “according to the investigation, between 2012 and 2018, the artist performed, as a soloist and without proper authorization, several songs from a musical group of which he was a part for several years.”
Thus, today the Eleventh Criminal Court of the Medellin Circuit The court issued a ruling requiring Velásquez to pay compensation and he was sentenced to four years. However, the renowned vallenato singer was saved from going to jail.
The judge The court granted him a conditional suspension of his sentence and established a 48-month probationary period, subject to payment of a bond of one current legal monthly minimum wage. In economic matters, it imposed on Velásquez Díaz a fine equivalent to 26 current legal monthly minimum wages, a little more than 20,800,000 pesos, for exploiting the music of Los Inquietos without any authorization.
