“One of the conditions of her federal probation is that she had to work and she was having a hard time getting a job (…) one of her biggest dreams is to be a model, so I said one + one and that’s two. I told her, look, you have to work, I’m going to hire you to be a model in my music video, your criminal case is over, I’m not a lawyer in that regard anymore, your dream is to be a model and why not be a model in my music video,” she explained.

According to an article by InSight Crime, Emma Coronel has been able to use the narcocultureparticularly the “buchona” style, to build their personal brand. This term describes women romantically involved with drug traffickers, who stand out for their extravagance and physical appearance modified through cosmetic surgery.
InSight Crime highlights that, although her popularity plays with gender stereotypes, Coronel could be seen as a symbol of female empowerment, although in reality she reproduces the same patriarchal stereotypes of narcoculture.
In this regard, Karina García-Reyes, an academic at the University of West England, points out that within the gender discourse in narcoculture, female identities are strongly limited, whether as lovers, partners, prostitutes or mothers.

Despite the increased visibility of women in contemporary narcoculture narratives, no female figure in the Sinaloa Cartel has achieved Coronel’s fame. Other prominent women in the cartel have been Guadalupe Fernández Valencia alias “The Patron” and Luz Irene Fajardo Campos, alias “The Comadre” or “The Godmother”, who are serving long sentences in the United States after collaborating with the cartel for decades.
Coronel’s influence has transcended beyond Mexico, extending to an international audience thanks to social media. In 2019, she launched a clothing brand with one of El Chapo’s daughters and appeared on the VH1 reality show Cartel Crew. According to InSight Crime, she used these outlets to promote various beauty brands, and was even interviewed by fashion magazines, such as Elle, after her release from prison.
So far, the music video for “The Lady” It has already had more than 355 thousand views.
