He Cuban musician Edesio Alejandro He asked for financial support to cover the cost of an alternative cancer treatment in a very advanced state that he suffers and that maintains him hospitalized in a clinic in the north of Madrid.
The petition has been published by the Cuban actor and singer known as Miguel Elkubanisimo on the GoFundme platformwhere the own Edesio Alejandro shared a message about the tough battle he is fighting.
“Today I write to you with a heart full of hope and faith to ask for your support in a deeply human and urgent cause. We are raising funds to help our dear friend Edesio Alejandro, a true icon of Cuban culture; a talented singer, composer, music and film producer who has touched many lives with his art and generosity,” wrote the campaign promoter.
Edesio Alejandro explained that the alternative treatment is expensive and long: 36,000 euros, with a duration of between one and two years..
“We are not going to wait until we have the full budget to start. Every small contribution counts and will allow us to acquire the medicines and products necessary for Edesio to begin his treatment as soon as possible. We know that with your donations, support and prayers, we can make a big difference in the life of our beloved Edesio.. We trust that, with God’s blessing and the solidarity of all of you, we will soon be able to see him back doing what he loves,” he added. Miguel ElKubanísimo
In the campaign itself Edesio Alejandro confirmed that he is currently in a sanatorium in Madrid and that, although cancer has not defeated him, he is “in a very close fight and things are not going well”He said he remains hospitalized “because the illness is causing a lot of pain.”
A source close to Edesio Alejandro told DIARIO DE CUBA that the musician is currently unable to walk. He added that prostate cancer has metastasized and has affected his spine.
“I hope that our Lord, the master of life and death, can guide a correct solution. I have all my trust and strength placed in it, although I must confess that I am very afraid.. Although we have not lost faith, fear is a difficult companion and we must fight against it to face this moment in the best possible way,” said the singer, official member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of Hollywood, in its Music Department.
“Once again, I turn to you. This time, I need a little more of each one and I do it with humility and sorrow in my soul“We have found an alternative medicine with 4Life Research products that we have read have very good results. Unfortunately, we cannot afford this treatment, as it is expensive and also has a long duration, approximately between one and two years,” he added.
The singer explained that his friend and artist Miguel ElKubanísimo, his family and doctor Dayami Tantanini were able to complete the first month of treatment and thanked the participants in the campaign for offering what they can for his recovery.
Edesio Alejandro, 66, has composed music for film and television. His wife, Idolka de Erbiti Sánchez, said in a campaign message that despite the seriousness of the situation they have made “progress with the radiation” and “chemotherapy will begin in September, one session every two weeks.”
He said that The sum required for alternative treatment can only be reached “with the solidarity and support of friends, family and all those who have been touched by his music and his spirit.”.
In an interview in March with DIARIO DE CUBA, when the severity of the disease had not yet deteriorated his physical and health condition too much, Edesio Alejandro explained that he left the Island when he saw that the treatment prescribed by his doctors was interrupted due to the shortage of necessary supplies..
“I came because I have been living with prostate cancer for four years. In recent times, the medicine and vaccine that controls this cancer have run out in Cuba. And since I am a Spanish citizen, I came here to receive treatment. But it seems that because of the time I was without the vaccine, the cancer became resistant, and they changed my treatment to one that does not exist and has never existed in Cuba. So I have to be here, I have no other choice: if I want to live, I have to be here.”
Upon arriving in Spain, it was discovered that Edesio’s cancer could no longer be treated with vaccines. Then she had access to other treatments that have never existed in Cuba: “We arrived, they did several tests on me at the hospital and the PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen Test) was rising dramatically. After I got the vaccine, the PSA continued to rise and the doctors changed the treatment. I had been four or five months without being able to get the vaccine because it wasn’t available in Cuba. It was really surprising, traumatic, difficult. When you make a decision that is something that life forces you to do, it is really very complicated.”
In September 2020, Edesio used social media to ask for a medicine that his mother-in-law, a Parkinson’s patient, needed. “The shortage of medicines in Cuba affected us like it did all Cubans,” he recalls. “I am a well-known artist, but that doesn’t give me any advantage. We went through the same situations that all Cubans have gone through. I had to ask for that medicine for my mother-in-law because it had run out. It has been a problem from one day to the next, with medicines being in short supply until the situation is now truly chaotic. Medicines that were made in Cuba are no longer made.”
Contrary to what one might think, not even a personality with his career in Cuban culture can be saved from the serious crisis that the island is suffering. “I was actually treated by the best doctors,” Edesio acknowledged. “What happens is that it goes beyond the doctor. There are times when there is not even the reagent to do the analysis. It is a complex issue. We have looked for things even in the CIMEQ Hospital (one of the best in Cuba), where we have had relations through the Ministry of Culture itself, and that place has not had any either. The issue of medicine in Cuba is a serious and general problem. Imagine that the company that exported my medicine to Cuba were people who have relations with my doctor. We knocked on their door directly and there was nothing.”
