It’s been a very hectic Tuesday at the offices of Atlético Nacional, which has officially confirmed the departure of coach Pablo Repetto.
The Uruguayan, who arrived during the Betplay League I 2024, did not show any major signs of progress in the second championship of the year and the board decided to cut his process short in a radical and unexpected way.
The green team is third in the championship with 13 points out of 21 at stake, a balance that, in theory, was not so critical but that for the decision-makers at the green team was an indicator of a complicated situation within the group. In fact, it is said that there are differences between the Uruguayan and some players.
And so the cycle of another coach at Atlético Nacional unexpectedly ended, and the process of selecting a replacement has now officially begun.
Mexican replacement?
Who will take charge of the team now? The first and most urgent thing would be to give the team to Diego Arias, who has previously helped out, is at the club and would be in charge of coaching next Saturday’s match against Jaguares, in Montería.
But obviously it would not be the long-term option and that is why some names have appeared who have already had, for several days, contact with the board, specifically with Gustavo Fermani, the club’s sports director.
Although there was talk of Mexican Rafa Márquez, who played for teams such as FC Barcelona, Monaco and Hellas Verona and is currently assistant coach of his country’s national team, the rumour is not true and the club itself has ruled it out.
Journalists in Medellin agree that the new coach would be a foreigner and that talks were already well underway, taking advantage of these days without competition.
There is talk of resumes from Argentina, Fermani’s country, and from Uruguay. In fact, a name like that of Alfredo Arias, recently fired from Independiente Medellín, has begun to be heard in the capital of Antioquia.
Another possible candidate, according to commentator Eduardo Luis López, is Mexican Efraín Juárez, 36, a former player with a past in local football and in Scotland and whose only stint on the bench would be his job as an assistant for the New York City Football Club of the MLS.
