The current M3 MacBook Air setup includes a retro-cool speaker unlike most workstations. When people are looking for sound beyond the laptop, the usual answer is bookshelf speakers. But the doc running this MacBook Air and iPad Pro setup likes an unusual option: an Edifier desktop speaker called the MP230.

Edifier Desktop Speaker Turns MacBook Air M3 Setup Into Something Retro and Modern
Reddit user KozukiYamatoTakeru (“Takeru”) showed off the warm and cozy setup in a post titled “A warm and cozy setup after working all day in a hospital.” They’re using a MacBook Pro M3, which we wrote about last week.
“I specifically made sure that the theme of my setup was warm, as we all know that a hospital is usually filled with bright white lights,” Takeru wrote, pointing out the workstation’s black-and-wood-themed colors and patterns. “Doctors usually read a lot of research papers and books after work, so that’s basically the use of all of this.”
Plus, the setup’s M3 MacBook Air, perched on a vertical stand and featuring a 4K external display, has more power than Takeru really needs for his tasks (most notably, reading). And he’s also turned to other elements for his setup’s audio. The laptop has four decent speakers, but Takeru opts for a retro-style desktop wireless stereo speaker that we’ve never seen in a setup before.
“The speaker is the Edifier MP230,” Takeru said. “It’s not the best, but I love the retro look and it does its job.”
Edifier MP230 Portable Bluetooth Speaker
Edifier, known for producing high-quality audio products at moderate prices for the past two decades, sometimes likes to have fun with its designs. Takeru’s MP230 has a retro design that the company repeats on the R32 speaker, a larger, more recent release that I plan to review. Both look like grandpa’s devices, although nothing as small as the MP230 stereo would have existed in their day. Both boxes have buttons that look like they came from the radio in a 1957 Chevy.
The MP230 costs just $99 and the larger and more powerful R32 costs $199.99.
The tiny MP230 produces 20 watts of sound (more than a MacBook Air) for 9 hours of playback. Here are more details about it:
- Multiple connections: Bluetooth, USB sound card, AUX, micro-SD
- Easy operation via piano-like manual buttons.
- Dual full-range drivers and rear passive radiators produce rich bass.
- Multiple audio inputs allow you to connect your devices.

An M3 MacBook Air and an 11-inch iPad Pro are all this doctor needs. That and maybe a headache from all the spiral designs on the screens and desk mat.
