There are worrying reports on Reddit that Apple‘s latest iOS 17.5 update has introduced a bug that causes old photos that were deleted, in some cases years ago, to reappear in users’ photo libraries.
After updating their iPhone, one user said they were surprised to find old NSFW photos they deleted in 2021 suddenly appearing in photos marked as recently uploaded to iCloud. Other users have also chimed in with similar stories. “Same thing happening,” said one Redditor.
“I have four photos from 2010 that keep reappearing as the last photos uploaded to iCloud. I have deleted them repeatedly.”
“The same thing happened to me,” another user responded. “Six photos from different periods, all of them I have deleted. Some I have deleted in 2023.”
More reports have been coming in overnight. One said: “A random concert photo taken with my Canon camera reappeared in my phone’s library and appeared as if it had been added today.”
It’s unclear what’s happening, but since some of the photos were taken years ago, this can’t be a problem when recovering recently deleted photos.
In Apple’s Photos app, deleted photos and videos are saved in the Recently Deleted album for 30 days, so users can recover or permanently delete them from all devices.
The reports could be due to an indexing error, photo library corruption, or a syncing issue between local devices and iCloud Photos. Another possibility is that by trying to fix a photo sync bug that occurred in iOS 17.3, Apple has inadvertently caused a new sync issue that may involve iCloud backups. Some users running iOS 17.5 Developer Beta 4 previously reported similar experiences. We will update this article when we know more.
