The next 12.9 Inch iPad Air will not feature mini-LED technology. Instead, Apple will stick with a regular LCD screen, like the 10.9-inch iPad Air. Previous reports suggested that Apple could update its iPad Air line with a mini-LED display similar to the current 12.9-inch iPad Pro. However, this move is said to be at odds with Apple’s strategy of keeping the iPad Air more affordable than the Pro.
A previous report from Display Supply Chain Consultants CEO and analyst Ross Young suggested that the larger iPad Air would feature a mini-LED display similar to the one found on the current 12.9-inch iPad Pro. This update would have offered several benefits, including higher brightness for HDR content, deeper blacks, and lower power consumption. Additionally, using leftover mini-LED display panels from the iPad Pro would have been a logical move, potentially offering improved display quality to the iPad Air at a more affordable cost.
10.9-inch and 12.9 Inch iPad Air models
However, in a recent post on Twitter, Young suggests that the high cost of mini-LED panels has led Apple to reconsider this approach. Instead, both the 10.9-inch and 12.9 Inch iPad Air models will have LCD screens. This decision is reportedly aimed at keeping the price of the iPad Air models more affordable for consumers while maintaining a clear distinction from the premium iPad Pro line, which is expected to transition to OLED technology.
Despite LCD screens on upcoming iPad Air models, Young suggests that Apple could launch a new 12.9-inch iPad model with a mini-LED display in late 2024. This move could potentially introduce a 12.9-inch iPad Air. high-end or a low-end one. iPad Pro, which offers an alternative for consumers looking for advanced display technology in their iPads.
Apple has not yet commented on any of these reports. The company is expected to unveil the new iPad line at the upcoming “Let Loose” event on May 7.
Meanwhile, as we delve into the features of the upcoming iPad Air line, speculation suggests that the upcoming iPad Air models will receive major updates similar to the Pro line. These updates may include the addition of a 12.9-inch model along with the existing 10.9-inch version, giving more options to consumers.
Changes to the camera design are also anticipated, with the new iPad Air models potentially featuring a vertically oriented camera bump reminiscent of older iPhone models. Repositioning the front FaceTime camera to the horizontal side will align the device with the user’s view when used in landscape mode or with the Magic Keyboard.
The iPad Air line is also expected to receive a performance boost with the inclusion of the M2 or M3 chip, offering improved speed and capabilities. However, Apple is not planning to release a new Magic Keyboard for the iPad Air line as part of an effort to further distinguish the iPad Pro from the iPad Air.
