I like a wireless charger, but I’ve never been too concerned about trying MagSafe for iPhone… until now.
This is because gaming brand Elgato has created the MagSafe MS W5 charging stand. Ignore the clunky name that looks like an errant cat has wandered onto a keyboard and focus on the fact that this MagSafe charger stand is styled like a Nintendo Game Boy Advance SP, aka the sleekest handheld gaming console ( Sorry, PS Vita fans.).
And oh my gosh, I want one.
This is even though the charging stand is a stylized piece of plastic that can’t be closed, has no working button, and does nothing more than hold a MagSafe-compatible iPhone. Sure it will facilitate the StandBy mode introduced by the iPhone 14 series and introduced in the iPhone 15 quartet, but it won’t do much else.
So put an end to those hopes of getting a Nintendo emulator from the open App Store and playing retro Game Boy games on an SP-type device. Maybe some other third-party accessory maker will figure out how to do the latter, but the Elago MagSafe MS W5 charging stand isn’t the one, boss.
However, for $25.99 / £29.99 / €24.68 on Amazon (sorry Aussies, no availability for you below), it’s worth going for the playstyle points alone. I could certainly see it fits nicely on a desk next to a Steam Deck or a docked Nintendo Switch. Just keep in mind that you need to purchase a MagSafe stand charging kit separately, as Elgato simply provides a stand and nothing more.
What’s more, the stand holds an iPhone in landscape orientation, making it useful for watching YouTube videos while doing something else, and it could work perfectly for video calls. There is also a cable winder under the stand, so you can prevent another cable from sliding across your desk or nightstand and getting cluttered with other snaking cables.
